Pictures

Finally, some better quality pictures of moi (or maybe not).

Graduation Day, 1994 Looking somewhat better groomed to receive my Bachelor of Science.
Warrnambool, 1997 Here I'm standing in front of a 20 metre cliff, the Southern Ocean at my back.
Frolic in the Fitzroy Gardens, 2001 For the purposes of everyone else’s entertainment, I am wearing a tricorne which I picked up in Venice in 1998, and a scarf I bought at the Sienese Palio.
Scenes of Easter debauchery, 2001: un et deux. It appears I am using a very strangely shaped cork screw. Number 2 is unfortunately slightly blurred, probably how I felt.
Rehearsal for Mahler’s 8th Symphony, Royal Exhibition Buildings, May 12 2001: I’m sitting in the front row of tenors as befits my distinguished appearance, sporting a Mephistophelian beard. In tribute to my choral society connexions I am wearing the traditional red TUMS windcheater. Pictures from the actual performance that night can be seen here: one, two, three.
Linda Zaid’s birthday party, June 9, 2001. The less said about this picture the better! Simon Milton and I are getting up to hi-jinks with Jodie Lockyer.

2001: A Finnish Odyssey

I went overseas in the middle of 2001, visiting Finland and Italy. In Finland I met up with two of my Doctor Who friends (known to the Who world as Auntie Krizu and Cardinal Zorak), who held a handfasting – for the uninitiated, that’s a pagan wedding. Until this time it was generally unknown that the two of them were in love; you can also read the short story I wrote for Krizu and Zorak which announced this fact on the newsgroup rec.arts.drwho.

Helsinki, June 26 After meeting up the previous day, here are Zorak, myself, and Krizu, reclining in our hotel room in Helsinki.
Helsinki, June 26 And now I’ve moved to the right.
Helsinki, June 26 Downstairs at the hotel, there was a bouncy castle. You can guess what we loons did with it.
Suomenlinna, June 26 Suomenlinna is a fortress set on one of the hundreds of little islands in Helsinki harbour, now a historic site. Not to be missed if you visit Helsinki. Zorak and Krizu are enjoying themselves on the rocks in a secluded corner of the island.
Paimela, June 27 After travelling to Krizu’s home in Lahti, we visited her friend Anna at Paimela, who assisted with the handfasting. Being just after Midsummer’s Day, it was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. For music, I sang “Pastyme with good company”. Behold the happy couple.
Lahti, June 27 Returning to Lahti for more celebrations, I’ve changed into my best dress.
Lahti, June 28 I wanted to use up the film prior to leaving Finland, so I snapped Auntie standing in her bedroom, and by her own admission, she is looking cute.
Lahti, June 28 Zorak took this photo of me giving Auntie a hug in the middle of Lahti.
Lahti, June 28 Let’s just say the Cardinal was taken slightly aback by what I did a moment before this picture!

My Abyssinian Cats

I had two 5-year-old Abyssinian cats named Gwendolyn and Cecily, but they’re now living elsewhere. Yes they’re named after the characters in that play of Oscar Wilde. Gwendolyn is a regular or tawny Abyssinian, based on a black cat. Cecily is a sorrel or ruddy Abyssinian, based on a white cat.

On the couch. Gwen is on the left, Cec on the right.
Cecily on the ledge and the scratching post. Cecily is a young kitten in these two pictures.
Gwen on the bed. A still kittenish Gwen is poking her tongue out.
In the bath. They’re much younger in this photo, and as you can see, Cecily is quite smaller and more kittenish.
On the ledge in the sunroom. Gwen and Cecily sit on this ledge to receive their daily dose of Vitamin D.

Inter-Varsity Choral Festivals

I attended my first IV in 1991 as a representative of TUMS, the festival being held in Melbourne that year, and for the subsequent IV in 1992 I was the Librarian for the Festival, which was held in Launceston and Hobart. Don’t expect me to own up to appearing in many of these pictures.

Sculling Races One of the most enjoyable things about singing with University choirs is the carousing at the pub... but these people seem to be enjoying themselves excessively!
Dress Ups The winning items at the 42nd IVCF Revue Night.
Academic Dinner Myself and Emma Morgan dressed sartorially for the academic dinner at Sydney IV, 2002.
Soprano Aria Competition To be eligible to enter the Soprano Aria competition you must be a Tenor or Bass. The resulting sound is more reminiscent of the “can belto” school of singing rather than the more familar Italian “bel canto”.
Recovery BBQ A picture of the young man as a hippy at the end of Hobart IV, 1992, standing under a tree at Salamanca Place with Kathy Pope. (I’m looking like that because I had caught the Dreaded Lurgi that year; recovery is the appropriate word here.)
