The MonUCS Soprano Aria Competition

for Tenors and Basses

Although not a traditional IV event, the MonUCS Soprano Aria Competition for Tenors and Basses was held during the 42nd Festival in Melbourne, and on this occasion a superbly sonorous sorority of sopranos entered the famed Eisteddfod normally held by the Monash University Choral Society. The evening was one of unparalleled glamour and good taste, the competition was fierce, and the line-up of singers was possibly the best that has been seen – and more importantly, heard – so far.

The imposing and beautifully attired Dame Wilhemena Hindenburg, in the centre of the picture, took the prize on the night (aka Siro), with notable mentions going to Tim J. and Maria von Foetus. The funniest soprano aria of the night was probably that of Nikolai Jerkoff, the famed Russian bass, seen here second from the right.
